[He was just as surprised as anyone that he had even woken up after all that – his memory was still fuzzy, but he did remember the attack – it was just everything afterward that was blurry. The inhuman screeching had him bolt upright, cursing and covering his ears, eyes screwed shut. It takes him a few more moments to finally open them, and he’s trying to scramble to his feet – But he feels weak, sluggish – he’s sure it’s because of the trauma he had endured during the scuffle, but he doesn’t feel the pain from his wrist or arm –
In fact, what he honestly felt more than anything was a burning, raw feeling in the back of his throat. And he didn’t like it at all. Still, there was something more important to worry about at this point, and he tries to shift the energies around him in preparation, but nothing came.
That was impossible. That was as much of a living part of him as anything else –
And the realization slowly was dawning on him, feeling like someone had splashed ice-cold water over his body.
He wasn’t alive.]
